Olive . . . The Mediterranean symbol for life, peace and prosperity.

Though olive trees don’t have rings to give away their age, scholars have concluded that some olive trees in existence today are up to two thousand years old.
Olive trees have been cultivated in the Mediterranean region of Europe for thousands of years. It is believed that wild olive trees originated in Asia Minor, spreading through Syria to Greece, and then from the 6 th Century BC onward throughout the Mediterranean basin. Through carbon dating, archeologists have established the presence of olive trees on the Island of Crete before 2500 BC.

The beautiful olive tree (olea europaea) is called the “tree of eternity” because of its ability to live a very long life. It adapts to the region in which it grows, and it’s well suited to hot, dry, and sometimes windy conditions, making the olive tree ideal for the valley regions of California and much of the western U.S. Typically growing to heights of 15 to 30 feet over many years, olive trees can survive nearly all weather conditions, except the frigid cold.

Wherever olives are planted, they bring their mood. Frequently mentioned in the bible, olive branches have been the symbol of peace for thousands of years. And throughout history, the olive tree has represented abundance and glory: some were even found in Tutankhamen’s tomb.

Olive trees bring an old world feeling of dignity, grace, and permanence to estate homes and commercial properties.

Pollinators - The occasional  Sevillano is said to increase Manzanillo crops, however heavy crops
are still  achieved without cross pollination.

Manzanillo olive oil is produced throughout the world and is very well accepted on the
international olive oil market. Further research on Manzanillo oil can be obtained from Olives Australia.

The tree has a low, spreading habit and while it is similar to many olives in that it can grow up to
30 feet tall, most Manzanillo trees  stay at around 20 feet for ease of management and harvesting.

The Mission cultivar was the most important olive in California in 1936, accounting for 52 per cent
of the acreage. By 1992, Mission trees constituted just 9 per cent of the bearing acreage. Manzanillo
has steadily become more important over the past five decades and now accounts for more than 58%
of the bearing acreage [and almost 83% of the non-bearing (newly planted young trees) acreage in 1992]."

"Manzanillo is one of the varieties enjoying the most international fame for the excellence of its flesh and
its extraordinary organoleptic characteristics." (Table Olive Processing, International Olive Oil Council,
