Olive . . . The Mediterranean symbol for life, peace and prosperity.
Though olive trees don’t have rings to give away their age, scholars have concluded that some olive trees in existence today are up to two thousand years old.
Olive trees have been cultivated in the Mediterranean region of Europe for thousands of years. It is believed that wild olive trees originated in Asia Minor, spreading through Syria to Greece, and then from the 6 th Century BC onward throughout the Mediterranean basin. Through carbon dating, archeologists have established the presence of olive trees on the Island of Crete before 2500 BC.
The beautiful olive tree (olea europaea) is called the “tree of eternity” because of its ability to live a very long life. It adapts to the region in which it grows, and it’s well suited to hot, dry, and sometimes windy conditions, making the olive tree ideal for the valley regions of California and much of the western U.S. Typically growing to heights of 15 to 30 feet over many years, olive trees can survive nearly all weather conditions, except the frigid cold.
Wherever olives are planted, they bring their mood. Frequently mentioned in the bible, olive branches have been the symbol of peace for thousands of years. And throughout history, the olive tree has represented abundance and glory: some were even found in Tutankhamen’s tomb.
Olive trees bring an old world feeling of dignity, grace, and permanence to estate homes and commercial properties.
